English Accents

Having grown up on the fault line between the long and short 'a', in South Kesteven (where is that?) where we had our own unrecognised English dialect, that the whole idea there is a mere dichotomy in English accents is silly.

Cringe when you hear somebody from the north? What about Wales, Ireland, London, the west country? What a fucking tit.

There is an advert on the radio at the moment for a 118 service or something similar, and it bugs me enormously because it comments that "If you are lucky, the person you may speak to may have a charming regional accent" says the guy with a broad Cornish-Devon accent. Regional to whom?

Accents are a wonderful part of life in the UK. I am unfortunate in that I have got a non-accent as far as I am concernes, i.e. what you would refer to as a proper English accent, and what others would refer to as snobbish. The misfortune of being brought up in Buckinghamshire I am afraid.

The day that there are no accents will be a sad one. Moving to Scotland and discovering the dialects and accents up here was just brilliant. Can still put people in areas of towns thanks to the slang and accent. Not quite Professor Higgins yet but getting there!
